During the Summer 2008 school term, I co-taught EDF 610 Trends and Issues in Education with Dr. Ron Childress and Amy Cottle. Dr. Lisa Heaton provided additional support for this project. I had the opportunity to develop a module for Dr. Lisa Heaton’s CIEC 560 Global 21: Strategies for the Classroom. I was one of six students who developed a module for this online professional development course during Spring 2009. The course was offered for the first time during Summer 2009 with Yvonne Skoretz as the facilitator. The course was offered again during Fall 2009 with Mary Ann Triplett facilitating. My module on Professional Communication and Collaboration was included first. It was about effective communication and collaboration strategies using online technologies such as lesson plans, databases, social bookmarking websites, and listservs. Below you will find my module that was included in the course.

Plagiarism Presentation

During the Fall 2008 semester, Yvonne Skoretz and I worked with Dr. Lisa Heaton to create a video to educate fellow doctoral students about the types and consequences of plagiarism. To find data for our video, we interviewed doctoral faculty and students about their knowledge of and experiences with plagiarism. We used the data generated from the interviews to create a video. We then presented the video to the entire doctoral student body during the Fall 2008 Doctoral Seminar. Please see the attached video and seminar program below.

Fall 2008 Doctoral Seminar Program

Additionally, we used this experience in our EDF 625 Qualitative Research in Education class for a group paper and presentation later in the semester. When Yvonne and I presented our video at the doctoral seminar, members of the group observed doctoral students and took note of their behavior. They looked for body language, questioning, and asked students about their overall impressions when they were presented with this new information about plagiarism. Those reactions were recorded and coded. The data generated from these observations was used to create the paper linked below.

School of Education Research Team Spring 09

During the Spring 2009 semester, I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Linda Spatig on the School of Education Research Team including Dr. Paula Flaherty, Cheryl Jeffers, Ruthann Arneson, and Annette Irvin. We observed and interviewed individuals associated with a local model school about their experiences. From the data generated through those observations and interviews, we created a program evaluation for the model school for their consideration as they made plans for the upcoming year. This experience taught me more about qualitative research and developed my interviewing skills. I also gained experience in writing with a team. Please see the report below.

WVHETC Poster Session

During the summer and into the fall of 2008, I was invited to work with a team including Dr. Lisa Heaton, Annette Irvin, Diane Downard and Yvonne Skoretz on a presentation for the West Virginia Higher Education Technology Conference. Our presentation was entitled “Using Multimedia to Enhance Instruction.” It was selected as a poster session at the conference.

My section of the presentation was an introduction to using podcasts in class. I handed out a brochure on podcasts including what they are and how they can be useful to teachers. I also demonstrated this by uploading a podcast I had created onto my iPod for conference attendees. They were able to experience what a podcast might be like as a student.

Survey Research

During the Summer 2009 term, I took EDF 711 Survey Research with Dr. Ron Childress. As a part of the course, we were able to help develop surveys to be used for a RESA IV mathematics workshop. Our class was divided into two groups. I worked in a group with Cheryl Jeffers, Robert Hagerman, and Diane Downard. Our responsibility was to measure teacher confidence levels when performing 14 mathematical tasks before and after the seminar. I took a lead role in the report by analyzing the findings and looking for significant changes in confidence levels of the participants. Please see our report below.

Social Networking Presentation

The Doctoral Seminar in the Fall of 2009 was centered around technology integration. As a part of this seminar, I was asked to participate on a discussion panel for a social networking workshop. Along with Dr. Lisa Heaton, Melanie White and Allyson Goodman, I spoke with students about the opportunities social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter could provide for them personally and within the context of their respective classrooms. We presented this mini-session four times during the seminar. Attached is an email from Dr. Lisa Heaton thanking me for my participation on the panel.

Multicultural Qualitative Research and IRB Approval

As part of the requirements for CI 706 Multicultural Education, I was asked to interview someone of a different culture or nationality about a topic of interest. I chose to interview a colleague from the school of education about his experiences growing up and going through the educational system in Venezuela. I was required to obtain IRB approval for this research as well, so I gained valuable experience with the IRB process. Attached you will find a copy of my IRB approval as well as the final paper written from data obtained in the interview.

I want to someday be a professor (I think). So, I used this portfolio as an opportunity to try out as many things that professors do as I could in this safe, supportive environment. Because professors do research, I did research. Because professors teach and develop courses, I taught and developed courses. Because professors present at academic conferences, I presented at academic conferences. So, this was my trial run at being a professor: a professorship with training wheels, if you will. This reflection discusses what I have learned and how I have changed. Now, I’m ready to ditch the training wheels and ride on my own.
